Believe it or not, petroleum-based products and many of the automotive "protectants" will actually contribute the the rubber's breakdown over time. And while a debate also rages on whether silicone is harmful to rubber over time, it does seem to keep things soft, pliable a resilient for a good while. My vote would be to skip the oils and try the silicone.
