You can increase the contrast of the display which will help a little. What you attempted earlier was to increase the brightness of the LED light but amongst the settings you should also see the contrast option which will enable you to increase or decrease contrast level. Keep in mind though that when increasing contrast you will also start to see some artifacting going on so that is something you have to live with if you want higher contrast.

The military version have what is known as a negative LCD vs the regular one that has a Positive LCD panel. Unlike Positive displays where you get the clearest view when looking at it straight on it is recommended for negative displays to look at them from an angle because when you look at them straight on the reflection of your body and face in the crystal will dim the view. So in dim light conditions raise your arm and then tilt the watch away from you and you will get a better view!
