I know what you mean, mine does something similar. Instead of leading me to the closest point first (or like in your case to the end), it points me in the direction of the start position, no matter where i am. Truthfully i've only tested this once when the watch was new to me, so i'm planning on trying it again now that i'm used to it. Will let you know what happens.
In the manual it does state that the track-back function "should" take you first to the closest point on the recorded track, and then lead u to the beginning via the same way you got there. If I have issues with it again i will ask the support at
Suunto.
