I had an Observer that did that in Namibia when I woke up in the desert dunes near the ocean and I'm pretty sure that the DEET mosquito repellent I was using had eaten the o-ring seals to the battery compartment and it was no longer air/H2O tight anymore. check your battery cover and its o-ring.
