M9 & Daylight savings time

Finally...

Well, here it is the M9, the big boy, real McCoy. What a great toy!

Just one problem, I paid for the watch over a year ago not knowing I would be waiting this long to receive it. Actually, I believed I would receive it sooner if I ordered it in Great Britain, which I did.

Which is where my problem begins. After caliberating the UTC to 5.0 to compensate for GB time zone, for which it was initially programmed, I was able to have a perfectly functioning time piece. Until today (daylight savings time).

I thought I would let sattelite atomic time change my watch so I turned on the GPS and waited (I don't know about anybody else but it sure takes along time to receive a signal here in NYC), after over 7 or 8 minutes I was connected and nothing happened. I thought it was odd but didn't think much of it until I turned off the GPS and changed the time manually. Then I turned the GPS back on only to change back one hour.

Am I doing something wrong? could it be that it was produced for the Great Britain market? or am I just a moron? Why does the GPS not set daylight savings time automatically?

Thanks,
Jacques

Unfortunately I'm not much help to your problem, but I would be interested to find out some more feedback regarding this watch: What's the yacht racing functionality like? In particular:
Start Line information
Information on Headers and Lifts
Information on Lay lines
Functionality for Laid courses
How long do batteries last
How quickly are satelites picked up
Etc

I'm looking to buy one, but have heard some mixed reports.

Thanks in advance for your help

I just got this watch last week and have not had a chance to sail with it yet. I have walked with the GPS on and have had my walk calculated and it seemed to work great. I can't wait to get on the water with it, unfortunately I race more one designs than PHRF so I will probably not get to really use it until Larchmont Race Week.

It does take some time to learn how to use it but with practice I should be able to start laying courses.

They do sell ARCS charts software for $150 for 10 charts, Unless one uses them commercially I think it's a rip off, if you divide 150 by 10, I guess it's not a bad deal but why would I need 10 charts.

The problems I have with this instrument is

1.) the duration of battery power

A.) I had the GPS on for about 2-2.5 hours the other day and it looked like it was going to run out of power, there was one bar left.

2.) It takes a while for it to receive a signal

A.) it's taken about 7-8 mins to get a signal everytime I've turned the GPS on.

3.) But my biggest problem...

A.) I had my hands full the other day walking through the hallway in my apartment when my wrist touched the threshold molding in the doorway. All of a sudden something went flying off my watch. I could not believe it, after waiting over a year for it, not to mention the cost, I find out the top covering, the cool looking part with all the lines, is made of PLASTIC which broke right off. I am soooooo pist off, why wouldn't they make it out of aluminum or titanium or some other metal what a rip off.

I hope that answered your questions.

Regards,

Jacques

Because GPS does not observe daylight savings time. GPS time is always in UTC. Just change the time zone on the watch manually.

Of course in theory the watch could know about daylight savings time, just like most modern operating systems. It's not as simple as you might think though, since the change happens (or doesn't) at different times in different regions of the world.
