I have been a Suunto fan since I bought the Vector and had so much fun with it and really enjoyed its accuracy and usability.

So, looking at the Suunto catalogue I was left baffled by the quantity of different watches that are, in essence, the same.
I mean why use the same shell and then put in/take out options to create more models? I understand that it's a money thing, and the big producers do that do appeal to different profiles of people, but I never quite understood why someone would buy an Advizor over a Vector or X Lander? An S Lander over an X Lander or the 'Nautical' Suuntos over the Core??? You really can use all of those watches for mountaineering, skiing and sailing aswell!

Do people really think to themselves "oh yeah, this one looks good, has an altimeter and a barometer.. wow, this one is exactly the same regarding the style BUT.. it has a digital compass.. I don't want a compass.."

Why don't Suunto people decide on a fewer models, make them the best they can in terms of quality and accuracy and then place them on the market.
I guarantee the customers would be more satisfied!

Excuse my rant, but it's been bugging me for a while now and I had to get it out of my system. :D

P.S. I LOVE SUUNTO.
PLEASE DON'T MOVE ALL OF YOUR PRODUCTION TO CHINA!!! No disrespect to the Chinese intended.

My son is deploying to Afghanistan in Dec. and I would like to buy him a watch. I am not sure which model would hold up, and provide the most benefit, during his deployment. Also, I am not sure about a backlight--wouldn't this make his position detectable? Looks like the Vector, X-lander or maybe the Core would be a good watch. I am also concerned about comments about the strap breaking--any feedback on this? Again, your recommendation is very much appreciated.

Thank you!
