altimeter and humidity

Hi,
I have two questions about my Observer.

1. I have noticed that often when I reset the altitude to local conditions and then confirm the setting with the Mode button, the altitude immediately shifts by a couple of meters (usually upward, though I am not sure). Why would this be?

2. Is the altitude reading affected by humidity? A friend of mine who has the observer told me that the altimeter was useless in Malaysia because the humidity there made the readings inaccurate. Would there be any truth in this?

thanks!
