Suunto Activity Manager 1.1

Suunto have posted an update to version 1.0 of this software on www.suuntosports.com and www.suunto.com.

Version 1.0 noticeably did not contain functionality to export logs loaded from the X6, to say, an Excel spreadsheet. Neither does version 1.1. (In fact there are no obvious changes to functionality) The good news is that the database which stores the log data: "x6.mdb" - located in the \program files\suunto activity manager\ directory - has had the user-level password protection that was placed on version 1.0 removed. If you have a copy of Microsoft Access 2000 or later, you can now open this file and extract data direct from Access into any other program. BTW: The database is password protected, so you may need to enter the password "koira" (no quotes) to gain access.

Those with a technical background may also be interested to know that suunto have written custom dynamic link libraries to program the x6 line of watches. These libraries give programatic access to the watches functions. Some options - such as setting the brightness of the display, or setting the watch time programatically - exist in this code but haven't been implemented in the activity manager software.

Obvious advice: Don't muck around with the database structure or the code, unless you really know what you're doing!

As an addendum to my earlier posting, a copy data facility *has* been provided in version 1.1 - it's just not particularly obvious...

To use it you need to select and open a log and choose the 'data' tab. Clicking the small and easily overlooked 'copy data' icon on the top right will copy the data to the clipboard from where you can paste into Excel etc.

Let me start by saying I just got my X6HR yesterday. I have discovered this thread which gave me two great bits of information. The Access DB password for SAM, and the tip of hidden features in the DLLs? Ultimately I was wondering if anyone has exploited these DLLs yet? I don't want to reinvent the wheel.

Aparently everyone wants software to replace the SAM. However SAM seems sufficient for me thus far, so I just want to write a small program to handle the currently unavailable functions. Although perhaps this already exists in Suunto offices, so maybe someone has a copy. Otherwise, here are the interesting functions I saw in the DLLs:

ResetHistory
ResetMemory
ResetWeatherLog
SetAlarm
SetDate
SetDisplayContrast
SetTime
SetToSleep

It looks as if we would be able to reset the weather log, change the display contrast, put the watch in sleep mode, and auto synch the time with your PC (which should be auto synched with atomic time). So did anyone try these things out yet?

Bummer

Well, unfortunately I cannot do anything without help. When you attempt to connect to the watch using these DLLs, you get the following message "Illegal user detected!", which apparently also causes the connection to fail. With no connection, the other functions simply crash the app.

I have sent a query to Suunto requesting access to these DLLs, but I am not optimistic about the results.
