SUUNTO X6m - watchband too long

Hi, Got a X6 for a present and am having problems adjusting the band. It is the black stainless steel and plastic version, and it stays as one round band. There are 6 plastic pin holders. Do you actually cut the extra ones off to shorten the strap to make it fit, and is the strap supposed to unlock somewhere to make it into a piece from each end of this beautiful watch. I googled it without any luck. Any help would be appreciated.
