Sn 841, but as far as I can tell, it has the updated module of the 90X models.

Seriously, SW 1.1.0?

That's the first one I've heard of. I seen posts from others with 908 models and they have SW 1.0.3. Looks like another update.

Hi Guys
I bought a CORE Dec 08 and experienced of course the same problems with my batteries.
Sent it back to Suunto (took them only a week to sent it back...but I'm living in Europe) and received a brand new one 26th Mar 2009.
S/N is 9116xxxx
S/W is 1.1.0
H/W is 3A
Until now it works fine....I'll keep you posted

cheers...

Hi,

I received my Sunnto Core all black today. Seems nice. However when I use the back light with the compassmode the light blinks on and off. Is that supposed to be like that?
Is there a problem?

Well my black & Orange Core serial 827**** locked up which was fixed by removing the battery. A few days ago I pressed a key and it went blank. I don't care if pulling the battery will 'fix' it. Its about a month old. DHL are sending it to Finland tomorrow.

I am a bit disapointed as I thought these issues had been resolved. Maybe the > 9 serial number watches will be ok.

no problems mate. when using the light on the compass the light blinks to save power as the compass and light are the most power hungry features.

Thumbs down Second Core at Suunto Service

<short version>

First Core bought in '08: worked for about 6 months, then one button stopped responding. Suunto service sent me a new one within a week.

Second Core worked for 2 months, then just switched itself off. Opening the battery compartment showed a) completely messed up thread and b) sealing ring missing. Sent it back to Suunto about 1 month ago. Didn't hear back.

Called Suunto helpdesk today to find out they hadn't even looked at it. And I'm 3 days away from a trip to Mt. Everest Base Camp.

Angry On my 2nd Suunto Core Replacement

I purchased a Suunto Core / Black-Orange as a Chirstmas gift on Dec 2007. Two months after climbing Mt Rainier in July, the battery just died. I didnt bother replacing it and just returned it for warranty to look at it. After two weeks, I received a brand new replacement. Suunto tech's didnt provide details why the first one failed.

Strange enough, the replacement started acting up by March. This time I decided to replace the battery assuming that Suunto placed an old one on the supposed to be brand new replacement. After 5 weeks, the battery was dying again.

So, I returned again. I received another brand new replacement. This thing is getting old. If this 3rd unit fails again for the same reason, I am going to cite Suunto for California's anti-lemon laws. The original Suunto I purchased had S/N of 74xxx. The two replacemenbt have S/N's of 8xxxx. Either Suunto will have to give me a refund or give the option to change to a different model.

My 3 year Polar RS100 is more durable than the hyped up Suunto Core. I have always taken care of them and never even dipped once under water. But the RS100 got once on the pool but never broke. So far, I am not just dissappointed but pissed at the quality of the watch.

Did you notice what manufacturer's name was on the Battery?
Energizer batteries is what Suunto have been putting in their latest watches.

Static problem sorted (I hope)

Big thanks to all writing on this thread - reading it helped me to spot that the problem with my Core Light Black going blank was due to static and that I ought to return it to Suunto.

Sent it via DHL, which was pretty painless, but hadn't heard anything from Suunto after 10 days. Contacted them and they explained that the Light Black was out of stock (would have been nice to have been told without chasing) but that I could choose a different model if I preferred not to wait. Opted for a Regular Black (which I think I prefer) and it was on my wrist within 24hrs and has worked perfectly since (touch wood), even when I remove my fleece and hear the crackle of static.

Thanks again for all the help/support/info.

I returned my third Black Core today.

I was very chagrined to have to return my third Black Core to the store.
I really love this watch when it is working reliably.
The store dutifully took back the watches and sent them to Suunto who replaced all three
very quickly. I asked for a credit note this last time as I do not want a fourth Core.

In each case, the time started to flip around to other numbers without warning. In the last case, the time would suddenly reset itself to 12:00 after being reset to the correct time within an hour or so whether I was wearing the watch or not. I also noticed that the compass was acting funny as well and the baro was also giving erroneous readings. I had done the usual changing of the battery each time to no avail.

The serial numbers for the watches are as follows:
Serial number:
1. 7286xxxx purchased April 13, 2008.
2. 8161xxxx replaced May 26, 2008.
3. 8266xxxx replaced January 17, 2009 and returned today, May 31, 2009.

(Note: As a point of information, I learned that the first number in the serial number refers to the year the watch was made, 2007 or 2008.
The second two numbers refer to the week the watch was made, July 8-15 in the case of the first watch.)

For the record, I owned a Vector for almost 4 years before it conked out.
I admit I have been soured on Suuntos now but I am willing to look at other
models if they have proven to be reliable in the past.
So I joined this forum today to see how others are fairing with the Cores as well as other models.
I see I am in good company...

NDGraham,
It wasn't until mid-February that the Core was FINALLY sorted.
As such you need to look for one with a serial 907 onwards.

I've got one of the latest Regular Black's and it works superbly.

Yes that is normal.
The Core will display the seconds each time the ABC function is altered but terminates shortly after.
That is why you can have seconds displayed on the bottom menu.

after couple of minutes it was clear and dry again...

WR to 30m? Shall I prove them? :-)
what do you say?
best regards from Prague

Hi Alois,

If it's normal, I really don't know. But I have the same thing with my camera lenses when moving from a cold place to warm place. For lenses this isn't really a problem, you just need to wait untill the condensation goes away.
In your case it means that the Suunto isn't air/water tight. You can always do the test in a glass of water. If the interior of your watch stays drie, ok, otherwise you have a problem and I would return it

Alois,
When you say your Core is one month old, can you tell us what the first three numbers are on the serial.
The latest Core's had this problem sorted.

Well that proves your Core is from the latest batches.
In this case it could simply be an isolated case where the unit is not sealed correctly.

My recommendation would be for you to inform Suunto of the underlying problem.
Even if they take no action at this point you will have the satisfaction should the problem worsen later your watch situation will have been logged in a report which should make it easier for you to obtain a remedy.

Yes... I have a Core Regular Black.
The regular black was only released this year, as such all regular blacks are the latest Core.

The glass crystal is the same as that on the Core Orange ~ Mineral crystal glass.

thank you Arthur, I know CORE REGULAR BLACK is very new model for 2010year....But I was not able to get the answer to my question - I checked some cheaper models ( CORE LIGHT GREEN with positive display ) but it has got mineral glass WITHOUT antireflex coating...
I want to buy CORE REGULAR BLACK because of the positive display but I need to know if the antireflex coating on the glass is present
thanks

Thumbs down New Core All Black, Same Old Problems

I have had my Core All Black a month and loved it up until today. I noticed a blank horizontal line two blocks tall across the middle of the display. I thought it might be a battery issue, so I changed the battery. After changing the battery the screen returned to normal. Over the next minute the same blank horizontal line gradually returned to the screen.

I have seen many posts about the watch re-setting to a flashing 12:00, but not the horizontal blanks. Is there a way to re-set something without having to send it back to the factory?

Core - All Black
SN - 9116
SW - Unknown - I don't know how to pull the info up.
HW - Unknown

Edited.... Update is that the dark screen Core's (including Orange/Black) have AR. Remainder do not.... but I am still awaiting confirmation on this.

However, what I can confirm is the screen on the Regular Black is that clear Suunto does not actually need AR.
Basically, when the sun hits the screen it actually promotes the black and enhances it's contrast level giving a strong and clear screen.
My Core Regular Black looks stunning in direct sunlight.

Taking the battery out and leaving it out for an hour will reset the device back to factory default.
What make of battery did you insert?
The new energizer batteries are the one's which Suunto are now using.

Also... to both members here.... Have a look at the forum http://forums.watchuseek.com/forumdisplay.php?f=233
It has a dedicated Suunto community which is very active.
You will most certainly get more replies there.
I am a member of that forum as well only I come under a different name of 'MAP'.

display problem

Hello,
I have a Suunto Core black-orange core model (serial#922xxxxx, sw#1.1.0 and hw#3A). And I had a display problem... The contrast is set to 4 (factory setting) but I can see some background "ghosting" in the zone above the hour display (vertical lines which appear and disappear).
I tried adjusting the contrast to 3, but in this case the display is very dim. If I increase the contrast to 5 or above, the "ghosting" problem becomes more disturbing.

I had tried to contact the Suunto helpdesk but they told me that the display appears to be normal and I must decrease the contrast to the point where the lines disappear... But at this contrast it's hard to see even the hour ;-)
Is there anyone who had the same problem?

Thanks

Thumbs down 2nd Core black orange loosing parts of the display

This is just disappointing!! I bought my first black orange in January this year a 2008 model. After 2 1/2 months it was loosing a vertical display line. I sent it back to Suunto and received a new one 8156xxxx within a week. Now 3 months later again the same problem came up! Vertical display line missing! I will sent that one back to Finland, too. I really love the style and the easy functions of that watch but if that happens again with a new black orange I think I will give up and break with Suunto! Hopefully the new one will work without any problems.

I'm afraid there is only one simple answer to this......
You need to ensure Suunto send you a NEW model that begins with a serial 907.
As I have mentioned previously, it was not until mid February this year that we started to see the latest update to the Core with all the problems sorted.

Models with serials beginning with 8 had the problem you mention plus battery issues.

Question Maybe is not a good idea...

Hello, I'm reading all the messages and I'm questioning myself to buy one Core Orange. All of you are scarying me.

I don't know what to do, it's a really good look watch and gots all i need, but i don't want to be day and night replacing the batteries or sending it to the Suunto service or initalizing the watch, because an outdoor watch must be work in serveral hard conditions, inst it?

Doesn't Suunto fixed all the problems with the COREs?
which serial numbers are fixed (in order to look for them)?

thanks a lot

I just got a light green Core for my birthday which I've wanted since they came out a few years ago. But boy am I glad I didn't get one prior to today. So far over the last 5 days I've been getting used to how the Core works versus the Vector that I'm very fond of. I haven't had any of the issues that I've read about in this post with batteries and resets so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. But what I do have a problem with is the compass, it seems to get stuck pointing in a direction, not matter which way I face. It seems to work for alittle while after I reset the watch (hold down upper and lower buttons together) but within a half day it is messed up again. I'm certainly disappointed in all the problems that the Core seems to have.

My serial # starts with 907

Suunto Core - just arrived...

Hey guys... It took me over 96 hours of studying reviews on various watches before deciding on purchasing the Suunto Core.

I purchased the Suunto Core All Black Military with black neoprene strap. I've been confused about the model as some places say the all black military doesnt exist? anyway, its all black with black screen and brown writing on LCD.

I sent a load of questions back and forth to the supplier. I got this reply..

I sent....
"Last night I did a lot of research comparing the Suunto Core to the X Lander. It seems there are a number of faults with the core but I am not sure if its with the 2007 models? Please advise you experience on both models and which has seen the most returns

It seems that all Cores with serial numbers before about S/N 911***** were faulty. Is it possible to confirm the first 3 digits of the All Black and All Black Military you have in stock? Sorry I'm being fussy, but I need to make sure I'm buying correct device for weekend.

Very last question, on the Military, is a neoprene strap because it looks different than the standard black core listed here."

Their reply...
"Earlier this year Suunto recalled all core’s due to a fault with the display, they have now resolved this problem and we are no longer receiving returns on these.

The serial numbers start with 92*****

The strap on the All Black Military is neoprene."

So....... I'm just about to get it out of the box.

I'll keep everyone posted on the performance after this weekend...

Temp not working properly??

Ok, so I've had my core for about 3 hours. Worn it for last hour or so and I'm very happy with the appearance and fitting of the watch. However, I've found the first problem... The temperature is massively out. Today, its 14 degrees and the watch is constantly between 26 - 28 degrees? Is it measuring body temp? Can someone offer any advice on this?

Thanks.

If it is like Vector, then the temp sensor is located inside on the circuit board and due to this, it reads the ambient temp of the watch body. If you are wearing the watch, your body temperature (or close to it) is what the watch displays.
If you leave the watch on table for a couple of hours, the temp should start showing room temperature.
This is the way it is with my Vector.

-Jan

Edit: It is actually very difficult to get accurate ambient temperature device on a watch for several reasons. First, the sensor will have to be insulated from the case somehow and the sensor has to protrude thru the case at the same time. This will create sealing problems, etc. But then a sensor that comes outside the body of a watch is not practical either.
No, I'm not affiliated in any way or form with Suunto, but I have electronics background and I can see many problems in constructing an accurate thermometer, that is not affected by body temperature, in a "small" watch.

Temp

Seems im not alone then, just purchased a core limited edition and feel rather let down.
Having done some tests it does seem unable to report the expected (air) temp when its been worn recently or still on my wrist.

Nice to know im not alone and that i have a duff one, not so good that a watch of this value cant even report a near accurate temp.

Unhappy Core Battery Life Issue Strikes

Well I don't know if they have the battery quirks fixed or not. I just got off the phone with Suunto and will be sending my Core All Black in for warranty work because it's eating batteries like its at an All You Can Eat Southern Fried Chicken Buffet.

S/N: 936xxxxx
S/W: 1.1.0
H/W: 3A

I purchased the watch in Sept of this year and within the last three weeks I've had to put 3 or 4 batteries in it. Not watch you expect from a watch that cost $300 or more.

I think that most of their watches are manufactured IN Finland but the Core I've found out is made in China. This is somewhat of a sore spot with me because there seems to usually be an issues with Quality Control when items are made in China. I also have somewhat of an issue with paying what I consider to be top dollar for something that is made in China but that's another story.

Carl

Core issues

The core has been somewhat of a experiment for Suunto.. While the early Cores were literally riddled with failures of all sorts- Most notably going through batteries like they were - well, something that you go through a whole lot of... most of the issues have seemed to settle down..

That is amazing that you say that you got your core in September.. By the serial number, it looks like it was manufactured in September.. That means that it literally came right from the factory, got into the store and into your hands in a matter of days- that is pretty impressive..

My suggestion is that you have just managed to get one that isn't working great- Some do manage to slip through. Send it back in and Suunto should stand behind it..

The cores are manufactured in China- the fact has been well documented both on this forum and around the web and has been the biggest source of complaints from everyone...

If this is a real concern, then I would suggest the Elementum Series by Suunto. It has the same functioality as the core, but it does have the exclusiveness that you obvioulsy in a fine instrument type of watch (it also has the price tag to back it up) and it is made in Finland.

My last Core is still going strong, just changed out the original battery. It's my every day watch.

Have you traded that 'old' X10 in for an Elementum yet?..........

Nope but its on my Christmas list

Hey Tweek!

Nope still got the X10 but have been favoring the X-lander Mil lately. I spent the summer working at a camp and playing Viking, and I didn't want to ***** up my X-10 on a shield. Just haven't managed to put back on my X-10... I popped a bezel and haven't gotten around to sending it in for replacement, so that is up tomorrow.. (yea black friday)

Really have not been burning up the boards like I used too, Tyler has made me a Mod here, so I stay current here, But haven;t been on the WUS board in a while..

What is new and exciting with you??

Blanking screen

All Black light Core.

Just purchased a couple of days ago (21st Dec 2009) All worked fine until today.
when activating the light the whole screen faded and went blank.

Read this forum, thought it was a dead battery, popped it out and back in.. works fine now?

S/N 9116xxxxx, I have no idea where the H/W and S/W versions are noted ???

So was this a battery issue ? (er No, as it is the same battery)

So was this a manufacturing defect ? (They are supposed to be solved?)

So any ideas, static ?

Great watch.. if it works.... i'll buy the Alu Black if plastic watches don't work 100%.

Unhappy screen went blank within 10 days/ couldnt open the battery compartment

I had ordered the core light green with a casio pathfinder and i kept the core for it's accuracy and aesthetics. After 10 days of very light indoor use the screen went blank, i had read countless of reviews regarding the poor battery life and faulty units due to it being manufactured in china so i called suunto customer service and asked them about it (my watch serial number was 931****) so they said these battery issues and other production issues were only present in the initial run and my watch was from a fairly recent batch.

After hearing this i optimistically concluded that i must have gotten a defective battery and instead of sending the watch back to amazon for a new replacement or suunto for repairs
(suunto charges you $8 if you want the watch delivered to your home address and none if you get it delivered to a office or you pick it up from the fedex store...i talked to fedex about it but they also couldnt figure out the logic in it!! cuz they said that sometimes they charge a residential delivery fee but that is just around a couple of dollars not $8)

i optimistically thought i would just give them the benefit of doubt and just replace the battery myself or like i read in this forum "remove the battery and put it back in" and everything magically would fall in place but after laboring for an hour to get the cover off and having metal flakes all over the surface from the coins i used to open the back cover i gave up and again began searching online for solutions to open the back.....one forum user even mentioned how he had got a battery replacement kit from suunto then he drilled two holes in the backplate so that he could get some grip!!!!! i just threw my hands up in the air and called amazon for a replacement.

i really am in love with the aesthetics of the watch and very few ABC watches IMO look so good and i dont have the heart to get a refund inspite of the many negative reviews.i hope that i had just been unlucky and got a faulty unit.

Amazon has sent me a new watch with a serial number starting with 941***** and am crossing my fingers that it lasts for the amount of cash i paid for it. As casios for 1\3 of suunto's prices last for years.

battery issue

Got my core for Christmas (thank you, awesome girlfriend!), stopped working yesterday -- image froze and the watch was not responsive. after a huge scare, exacerbated by reading about the common problems in this forum, I changed the battery (easy to do), works fine for now, hope I don't have any other issues. Serial number starts with 935.

new core older than the one i sent!

i received a core alu for christmas but within a day it played up and kept locking up. i sent it back but after a couple of weeks i'd heard nothing so i called the helpline , they told me it might be another 3 weeks before the service centre looked at it, i told them this wasnt good enough and to return the watch so i could get a refund. They said ok but then i got an email saying they had replaced it. when it arrived i found the serial no to be older than the one i sent
84660152 i returned
82864489 received
i phoned suunto again who told me that the serial no is irrelevant as if it comes from the service centre it will have the latest hardware/software in it. is this true? or am i being had over.
