Well, I have both. The original Vector from 8 yrs. back and recently aquired Core B/O and I have to say that they are the same size physically, but Core looks a tad smaller due to the black color. As far as readability, my Vector (positive) is perfect and Core is so-so. I can read Vector time fine in dark without glasses, but for Core I need glasses. In bright sunlight (daylight) the readability on Core is fine and excellent on Vector. If I had to decide on which is better and not letting the "new toy" factor of my Core give it any edge, I would have to say that readability goes to Vector, functions go to Core as well as the visual effect, but I could not select between the two, these are so different. Maybe it would be easier to decide if my Vector was negative. -Jan

Vector vs. Core Hi! I am thinking of buying either a Vector or a Core and would like to know which one is better in terms of functionality, precision, durability and reliability (i've read about the Core's problems with SN before 911). Also if someone could explain to me what the main differences are between the two watches and which one you would recommend? I plan to use the watch for mtb, hiking, windsurfing and mostly outdoor sports, so i need a reliable rugged watch. Thanks ![]()

I can't comment on reliability or durability. I had both a Vector and a Core for a while. I only have the Core now, which is my verdict. Notable differences from my perspective (going from memory, not the instruction books or spec sheets, so I may be missing something): The interface on the Core is generally much better. In spite of the fact that the Vector needed a lot of menu use, I never quite got the hang of it and had to keep the manual nearby. It was very unintuitive. The Core, on the other hand, was so intuitive that I actually never needed the book in the first place. The Vector's altimeter drifted a lot. I had to reset it a lot, which is not a huge surprse for an altimeter/barometer (I've owned several), but the Core does not drift much compared to others. It also has an "auto" mode that switches between alti and baro modes, which I haven't used. The Vector has an altitude alarm. Initially I thought that was useful but its only real use seemed to be driving my family and friends crazy, so I stopped using it. The baro record on the Vector and the Core are different. The Vector gives you actual numbers for the last six hours and at six hour intervals before that for the last four days. The Core shows a 24 hour (IIRC) bar graph. The Core also offers logging if you want. The Core has a "storm alarm." I haven't used this much because I found that it works perhaps too well. I live in the Northeast and bad weather usually gives enough warning; if I lived somewhere where tornados or thunderstorms popped up suddenly I might find this more useful, but I found that the alarm was sounding in response to changes in baro pressure that didn't correlate to actual storm activity. YMMV... Backlighting on the Vector was more effective (both my Core and Vector were "positive" (dark on light background) dials. On the whole, I found the Core a better (though not perfect) tool. YMMV...
