Question "Possible real life situation"

hello all, my girlfriend gave me a core light green for xmas(i know xmas is not even close, i am so spoiled ), i love the watch so far, But i need your help, i would like to make sure i understand the baro/alt fonction, i am not asking to understand everything 100%, just want to make sure i know how it work for the use i will make of it. and for that i will use a feature that i like a lot in the instruction manual, the "possible real life situation". the situation is that i am climbing a mountain and i know the altitude of the summit and i want to track my progress as i climb.

here it is:

i arrive at pinkham notch, NH, USA, at 6pm, i will sleep in my westfalia and start hiking tomorrow at 6am, right now my watch is set at baro, i check the weather report at pinkham notch to make sure the actual atmospheric pressure is the same on my watch, and it is.

6am, i am ready to start hiking (i check baro again, its matching), i switch the baro for altimeter, since i know the altitude of pinkham notch, i have both the pressure and altitude as a reference value, which one should i use?

i reach the top, check the altitude, it is not the same, i correct the reference value? let say i dont have access to atmospheric pressure on top. i start getting down, but i get really tired when i am at the lean-to and decide i will sleep there for the night, i switch my watch to baro? because if i dont, i might not have correct reading in the morning when i am ready to leave?

does this make sense?
am i completely off?

Francois

No it makes sense..

but during the night, I would switch it over to Auto mode so that it automatically switches over from Alti mode to Baro mode. If it shows vertical movement slowing for say 30 minutes, then it realizes that you are no longer moving and it switches over from alti mode to baro mode..

In real life, what you want to do is switch to Alti mode at the trailhead or another starting location for which you can get a correct altitude reading and then setaltitude on the watch. I have had much better luck with that approach. Good luck/enjoy/stay safe.

thanks guys

plus if you dont switch from baro to altimeter, the baro will stay accurate for a long time

my storm alarm went on twice this morning!!
