Where do you get your references from?

I´ve had my suunto core for about 5 months now,and i´m still pretty unsure of how I/where i´m supposed to get my references from regarding both hPa or altitude.
I´ve been searching the web for hPa readings and found them on a local weather forecast site, so I think i´ve got them down.
But regarding the altimeter, where do you get your references from-maps,local information?
Oh by the way,I live in Norway.:P
And in contrary to many other users in here i´m very satisfied with my core-a absolute pleasure to wear!

But If I am on the trail, and I happen by a trail marker, they often list the altitude, or here in the US, when you climb a peak, there is often a USGS (United states Geoligical Survey) marker at the summit that lists the altitude... When I am in the field I use these...
