Beware the new x10 mi

Hello Everyone,
Firstly id like to say that the new x10 is faster than the x9.
However i am already onto y 3rd x10mi because the outer bezel or faceplate that suunto have supposed to have made better than the x9mi are starting to peel.Whatever they coat the bezels with, last approx a week or 2 then it blisters and peels.I am looking at my 3rd watch which were replaced by the dealer here in the uk.Ive only had the watch (es) 3 weeks and at £350 a go here in the uk you would think they should have sorted the bezel problems.
Fortunately i love the watch but the military guys are not going to like this one unless they sort it out.
When the bezel peels it makes the watch look cheap and tacky because it loses its rubber feel and ends up looking like a cheap casio..
Hope i can sort some bezels phoned the dealer today and they are less than amused and asked me to sent this one back also, but i suggested replacement bezels will let you all know the outcome...

It's been over one month with my X10. I wear it all the time. I wear it during shower and all outdoor experiences, including motorcycling. No signs of wear or tear of any kind so far...

Bezel Problem

Hi,

I have had my X10 mil version for 2 months and I was surprised yesterday when I saw the left side of the bezel popped up. I haven't used the watch for any activities as it's winter time. This is very surprising quality from Suunto for a watch with this price tag. Since I got my watch from eBay then I'll be contacting Suunto Finland on Monday to see how to fix this. I wouldn't want to send the watch anywhere unless there's no other option. Very disappointing especially that the X9 had problems with the bezels but it seems Suunto didn't change the way much in the **** design.

Hi NavyBrain,

I have the same situation with my X10 mil. I bought it from ebay and the my watch's bezel popped up and it is also peeling. Have you called Finland?, if you have, what did they tell you so you can get your Suunto fixed?

Thumbs down Bezel Problem

Hi,

I have contacted Suunto's Help Desk in Finland yesterday Monday the 22nd and explained the situation. What's fortunate is that Suunto watches have 2 years warranty regardless where you buy them from, and since the X10 is a new model which was launched in August then users are safe for at least another 20 months even without having a receipt.

It is really unfortunate to have such a bizarre quality for all that money in which was supposed to be improved more than the X9. If you guys are using the X10 then I suggest that more complains should be made to Suunto in order to made better bezels. Suunto customer service told me that they will send me a replacement bezel with no extra cost as long as I'm a registered user. And that's not a problem as long as you provide them with the watch's serial number.

The problem is that the new bezel that they are going to send me is the same as the one that came with my watch, and therefore the poor quality isn't giving me any confidence that the new bezel will hold any longer than the one that came mounted on the watch.

Unless, more users complain then Suunto will not do anything about this and therefore we will be stuck and suffer with what we have before Suunto realizes it's a major problem.

The interesting thing is that the person I talked with assured me that all X9 bezels are compatible with the X10 model and therefore I'm considering of ordering an extra Carbon Fiber Bezel in case the new one broke down along the way.

Hope this could be helpful for others who are facing the same problem.

Bezels are not the same..

I realize that you get a better price of of ebay, but this is why I generally recommend that you buy from an Authorized Suunto Dealer.. We can usually hepl get those repairs turned around faster...

Second. The Bezels are not the same. The X9i has an oval shaped face where the X10 is completely round.. (Trust me, I own both).

Suunto X10 Mi Version Bezel Problem

Help around faster you say? Man, the quality of the product is so poor whether it's sold by Authorized Dealer of in a 1 dollar shop. I got the new Bezel sent to me directly from Finland and after ONLY 4 days HONEST TO GOD, the bezel's exterior transparent layer started chopping off slightly.

This is the WORST watch deal I have ever done. It's very disappointing indeed.

Suunto X10 Mi Version Bezel Problem

Navybrain is right. I just got the new bezel for my X10 military and it is the same quality as the old one. It doesn't make any sense replacing the old bezel with another bezel that is going to be peeling again soon. I think I am just going to keep using the old bezel and find me some silicone adhesive tapes to glue it back again to my watch. If someone knows where to get those silicone adhesive tapes, please let me know. The video on the link below shows the tape that I am talking about:

Tape

I don't know the exact stuff that is supplied by Suunto, but some pretty similar alternatives include

3M moulding tape or Loctite Power Grab

Hey the problem that yo describe... it is only the second time that I have heard of this particular issue.. can you post a few pics??

Ehh, I had this same peeling happening on my X10. Really didn't take more then a week for it to start peeling off. However in all honesty it was my fault, I did grind the face of my watch on the under edge of my desk, and that started it. After that it just got worse and worse, untill I just got fed up with it and rubbed the darn rubbery stuff off! ;P

To be honest, I think it looks just fine with the rubber peeled off. Its black plastic underneath and its just as shiny as the strap (no -clearly- visible difference in colour or texture) especialy once your strap gets worn abit, it too starts to look more like a black strap. Took abit of scrubbing (with my fingernail) to get it all off, but was suprisingly easy o_O Makes you wonder why it was coated that way in the first place?

Thumbs down X10 Mi Strap and Bezel

I have had the same issue. the watch is 2 weeks old, took it skiing and now the bezel has popped off. It can be pushed back down and it clips into place, however if you flex the strap laterally it pops off again. i guess I am now going to have to get in touch with finland and get a new bezel, disassemble my £350 watch and re fit another bezel! Never had this trouble with casio!

After the problem happening for the 2nd time...

Hi guys,

After the same problem happening for the second time. I have contacted Suunto and explained that we all need a solution. Apparently, they don't even admit there's a problem as that's how corporations try to sneak out of their obligations to provide real solutions.

Nevertheless, I love my watch and I'm willing to give it a third shot to see where this lie going to get us to. The "Help Desk" said: " If you don't like the watch and want to return it then contact the retailer". Very easy to say, but while we all know that no retailer would give you a refund for a product which has been sold for more than 30 days then the bottom line is that we are basically stuck with this **** quality watch.

I have attached a picture which I took of the watch just today. And by the way, the layer of the bezel started chopping off just after a few days of usage. Summer hasn't started and this completely sucks.

Let's start a petition or something to get them either re-produce the bezel in a decent way or get us refunded. Cheap corporates want to make a quick buck on the consumers' back.

Thumbs down Bezel ****

I have just spent 15 minutes in a Q to speak to an advisor (lord knows what cost on my phone bill!)who tells me that I can change my own bezel no problem. I am not convinced that with serious use, this problem is not going to occur again. It seems pointless designing a watch for use by the military only for it to fall apart atthe first sign of stress. If i was on operational duty now I would be pretty p***ed off right now.

NavyBrain is right, this is not acceptable and I fail to see why I should be pulling my watch apart. For the money i could have bought a garmin wrist mount GPS and a cheaper less able Suunto which would have ticked all boxes between them! This needs sorting out.

Frustrated

Guys,

Can someone suggest any liquid solution that would chop off the outer layer?
Also if someone would recommend some decent glue that is water resistant and survive in extreme heat under the sun.

If an after market solution could work to solve these issues then we can probably avoid disturbing big shot Suunto otherwise we're going to just p.i.s.s them off

Looking forward to hear from you guys.

Regards...

Hey-

I got this watch from a buddy for Christmas (seems he bought two and only was charged for one- or something like that). Anyway, I haven't used it for anything strenuous yet and yesterday the bezel popped out. It appears to have some sticky on the underside and I was able to stick it back into place- but ... not really 500 dollar quality if you ask me.

I wonder if there is any potential damage to the watch from just popping the bezel back in- I could see a small copper wire that circumnavigates the watch face just under the bezel and I wonder if having to pop the bezel back in now and then will damage it and thus damage the integrity of the watch?

I agree with previous posts- for the money, one should be able to run this thing over with a mack truck and still have a viable watch... too bad...

Cheap

Well, I guess someone figured out how cheap the watch is and start giving them for free somewhere.

There's no problem with pressing the bezel in as it's supposed to be a "decorative" part according to what the "Help Desk" said.

Nevertheless, if you want to use the watch on daily basis then you would need to put a new bezel in the pocket as after a couple of months, it will definitely be useful.

Bezel problems on x10 as well?

Are the users who are seeing problems with the bezel only seeing it on the x10 mil or are they also seeing it on the standard x10? I was pretty excited to purchase this watch before I read these reviews on this thread.

Bezel Fix Project

Hi guys,

After receiving a new bezel AGAIN from Suunto. I was determined to figure out what's causing the bezel to pop out in the first place. I will attach a few pictures of the modifications I've made to the new bezel to "Hopefully" solve this mystery which Suunto doesn't want to admit.

First, I took a look at my old bezel which I noticed was broken from one of the 2 pins that hold it in place. This in theory means that the pins are facing too much tension to hold the bezel in place. With this cheap material which isn't surviving the pressure for a long time, then the only logical solution was to trim the inner tips of the pins in order to ease the tension when it clips in place.

To do this, I have used soft sand paper to shove the pins slightly. Many of you would think that this would make it easier for the bezel to pop out, but think that the bezel will not pop out because there's no pressure from the inner side to push it outside, and with extra glue in place then it should hold in place while the pins are still keeping pressure without being tensed.

Now that's hopefully solve one piece of the puzzle. The other problem is still with this layer that chops off. I tried to experiment on the old bezel to seek an easy way to chop it off. With nails, sharp knife, soft sand paper, pure alcohol, WD40, and boiling water, but didn't do much of an effect. By the way, the sand paper would damage the plastic of the bezel so don't use it if you are trying to chop off this layer with it. Eventually, I decided to mount the new bezel without chopping off this layer and hopefully it wouldn't start getting chopped by itself like the old one did.

The first picture shows how the right side pin is popped outward.

The Second picture shows how the new bezel's pins look like after I sand papered them.

The third picture shows how I placed the glue pieces. On the sides, I used the glue pieces that came with the X9 bezels as they are thinner than the glue pieces that comes with the X10 bezels. I cut the pieces in half and placed each on every side.

Hope this would have helped a little bit, and I'll keep you posted about the updates if it would work for the long term.

Luckily, I manufacture parts for diving purposes so if this wouldn't work then I might make a mold for it if many showed interests to have something decent made instead of this cheap material.

Regards. W.A.

Hi there
I have x10m for almost four months and same problem appears. The rubber layer peels of but besides this the bezel is slowly splitting vertically into two parts. Have no problems with popping the bezel off. Don't know how this is possible. I've contacted helpdesk today, and will send them picture of my x10 and S/N shortly. I'll let you know the result.
I'm really badly surprised with the quality of Suunto's high-end product.

Is it possible to find anywhere a step-by-step instructions how to dismount the watches to change the bezel?

Thanks for all your posts guys, lets hope our gadgets will not pull apart again :-)

Hi Hany,

Really unfortunate news, but trust me when I say this, Suunto knows exactly the problems with these watches yet they are not taking any measures to fix them. Let's see how much the guys in charge will be requesting as Bailout from the Finnish government due to their corporal failures.

Anyway, here's a link to Step-By-Step video that shows you how to disassemble and replace the bezel.

So the bezel is changed already. Let`s see, how long this one will work. Thanks a lot for your help NavyBrain. I`m thinking about replacing the black rubber bezel with new one from x9. It looks exactly the same and there is nothing to peel.

Thanks to all.

Hi Hany,

No problem. But the X9 bezel will not fit the X10. I have purchased the X9 bezel previously as I though it would fit according to what the "Help Desk" said out of desperation. The X10 bezel is round shaped while the X9 is oval shaped.

So far, since my slight modification of the X10 bezel it seems OK on the watch. I will keep the guys on the forum updated regarding the status, but shoving slightly the pins of the bezel, I think the problem would have been solved.

IF you found a solution regarding how to peel off the outer layer that usually chops off, then please let us know.

I was an early adopter and I faced the same issue. I picked this up within the first 2 weeks it was released and was disappointed when the bezel began peeling. After it started peeling I began a long and arduous process of scratching off the top layer with my fingernails as anything harder would scratch the plastic. I also rubbed it with my thumbs until it burned and blistered.

Finally I got it all off after 5-6 hours of rubbing and scratching every moment I had when I didn't need my hands. ie: watching tv

I was temporarily satisfied because the watch didn't look like it was falling apart for a few days until it cracked. WTF! Was I pissed! I got Finland to send me a new bezel. I replaced it and was very careful not to scratch the face. (Obviously defeats the purpose of an outdoor watch)

It began peeling again and I'm not sure if I want to rub it all off to have it crack again. The x9 face doesn't fit or else I would have replaced the black matte one with the carbon fiber. Anyone try non corrosive solvents to rub off this top layer?

Unhappy I am in Thai, how to get my X10 fixed

Same problem, but I am in Thai now and maybe stay for about a year. I get this watch from a friend who live in US a month ago. If I email to Suunto to report the issue, providing my watch SN, is there any chance I can get a new bezel shipping from Finland?

Suunto Bezel

Suunto ships worldwide, just make sure that you give an accurate address. If you have a company/hotel address then it would be better. The problem is that you might need to replace the bezel again later due to the fact that the bezel won't survive for a long time before it breaks again.

Try to see the modifications I made on the new bezel so you can follow my lead to hopefully avoid the problem. Since the end of February when I modified my new bezel, until now, it seems to be working good

Let us know how things are going.

Hi there,
Suunto sent me two bezels, both started to peel after 5 days.
I then was quite pissed off and sent the watch back to Finland, they replaced the old bezel with a new one non "gummy".
This new one seems much better, does not peel nor scratch.

I think they realised the problem and changed the material of the bezel.
the new one is different but still looks good with the strap.
I received my watch back on friday last week.

I not only have the problem of the bezel pop-out but the rubber surround covering the buttons has perished.

The centre "Enter" button has completely detached leaving a hole!!!

I have big misgivings into the design of this "so-called" outdoor activity watch!!

I represent a Government body who were thinking of purchasing these units on a large scale and after only 8 weeks of standard wear (one dip in a shallow swimming pool and washed afterwards) it is destroyed!

Tacky...

Bezel

Hi guys,

Just a quick update. My bezel hasn't popped out as it seems after the slight sanding to the pins then it sat firm without tension in its place so that's the good news.

On the other hand, since the last time I received the bezel it was covered with this gummy-kind layer in which has started to chop off again.

I think since Suunto seems to have realized the problem with this cheap layer and decided to remove it then the best option is to get one and do the same modification I've done previously in order to eliminate the popping out problem, so hopefully this will settle all the problems in the watch once and for all.

For those who haven't seen the modification process, please look into the thread for the pictures I have uploaded previously to see what I did.

Hope everything works well eventually.

Same troubles

I am in the same boat as everyone else as far as the bezel peeling then cracking. My question is how long is the turn around time for them to ship out a new bezel and as of today are they improved? thanks in advaced.

New Bezel

Guys,

As mentioned earlier that the new bezel now Suunto has is simply without this gummy-like layer which chops off. That's a good news, but, the bad news is that the dimensions of the 2 pins which hold the bezel in place have not been changed and therefore the same amount of pressure applies on them when they are in place, in which would result in getting one of them eventually cracked as it happened several times before.

My advice to all of you, is that to sandpaper the pins a bit to reduce the tension on the sides before you mount the bezel on the watch.

Another thing I have noticed regarding the glue pads. When I replaced my old bezel with the new one a couple of weeks ago, the old glue pads seemed a bit dry. This means the glue pads get effected by the dryness of the weather and of course the temperature. I'm currently experimenting with different types of glues on the old bezels which I have to see which one would have better effect on the long term instead of the glue pads. I'm using different Marine Grade glues in which I usually use for other projects.

To see what I mean, you can compare the difference between the old glue pads and the new ones to see how dry the old ones would be.

To do this, take off the old ones, then you'd notice a slight whitish layer on them while they are removed/rolled. This whitish layer is a result of dryness. The new pads wouldn't form this layer if you try to roll them or stick them.

I hope this would help, I think Suunto really needs to improve their Research and Development department as such small issues happening is a pity.

It's usually shipped the same week. I always get mine within about a week when I order them. I'd assume this is the case when shipping worldwide but it would also depend on the postal service in the destined country.

Hi NavyBrain, I wanted to know how to order the new bezel did you request for the "non-gummy" bezel from the help desk? I asked and was told that they only have one type of bezel available for replacement

NavyBrain can you please post photos of the non-gummy bezel so I can email them to the suunto customer service member I am dealing with and show her I am not making this up. Thanks.

Suunto has only 1 type of bezels now and they are only non-gummy. So if you go ahead and place an order then you'll get a non-gummy one. You may also specify that in the e-mail you write to them just to be on the safe side. As for me to take pictures, I'm currently abroad so that would take a while, but it's pretty noticeable and easy to see when you see the bezel.

hi..

Firstly id like to say that the new x10 is faster than the x9.
However i am already onto y 3rd x10mi because the outer bezel or faceplate that suunto have supposed to have made better than the x9mi are starting to peel..

Hi guys,

I faced exactly the same problems like you all. The ph***ing bezel began to crumble and popped up after three days of (gentle and endearing) use. I wanted to ship it directly to the repair center in Vantaa (instead of sending it to my dealer who would do exactly the same - but with a week delay). While waiting for the UPS mac I found this helpful forum and decided to order a new bezel from the helpdesk and fix it on my own. Two days later I got an E-mail response from Finland:

[...] we are sorry for the confusion but actually, this week the service center just started repairing the bezel ring in a new way to have greater durability. We used to send a bezel ring for warranty but this new repair can be done only in the service center. So please send your x10 to the service center [...]

I'll keep you in the loop what happens...

Greetings from Bavaria,

X10

Hi guys,

I can tell you that since the last time I did the modifications on my watch as I listed the details above in this thread, I never had a problem since. That was something a bit logical to do and I'm very pleased of the outcome.

I'm sure that Suunto Customer Service is following this thread just like many of us, and they did adopt new techniques in dealing with the issue.

I'm not aware of what's the new process of fixing the problem by Suunto is, but I would guess it would be pretty much as what I stated (Hopefully).

Let us know how it goes when you get the watch back from Suunto.

Best luck.

W.A.

So, my bezel popped off too. I mailed it back to Suunto. I tried to get the Bezel off but it was held on at the top and bottom by something other than the tabs (one that broke). I wonder how much they will charge me to fix it?

They won't charge you a penny, just yet. Since the watch has 2 years warranty. Just make sure you send it as soon as you can since they are taking 10 business days to get the watches repaired. I personally have never had a problem with a watch like this one and I doubt I will have such problems with any other brand/model. Let's see where this is going to end.

We will have to see. I really like all of the features of my watch. A fellow a few posts up mentioned that they are repairing them a different way that is supposed to be more reliable. I've got my fingers crossed. I sure do miss my watch already though I'll let you guys know what happens after I get it back.
