I just bought an X9i yesterday. From what I've read since I brought it home, there are two different versions of display: gray with black numbers and black with gray numbers. I have the black background with gray numbers. I didn't realize that there were two different versions when I bought it and I think I'd like to try the other version. Or... is there a way to reverse the display? I can't figure it out if there is. I'm not sure yet if this black background is difficult to read or if I'm just not used to it yet. It seems too dimly lit. I've tried adjusting the brightness, but that only seems to make the red light brighter. Any comments or insight would be appreciated. Thanks! Matt

Just to clarify: Look at the two x9i's at the top of this page - SUUNTO X9i Compendium My case looks like the one on the left, but my display looks like the one on the right. Hmmmm. How do I get the display shown on the right? Thanks in advance! Matt

Well, It's becoming clearer..... I have the X9Mi (the military version)....which makes sense, as I bought it at the Military Clothing Sales store on a base overseas. From what I see online, it appears that all the Mi version have the black background. Can I brighten the gray? Thanks! Matt

You can increase the contrast of the display which will help a little. What you attempted earlier was to increase the brightness of the LED light but amongst the settings you should also see the contrast option which will enable you to increase or decrease contrast level. Keep in mind though that when increasing contrast you will also start to see some artifacting going on so that is something you have to live with if you want higher contrast. The military version have what is known as a negative LCD vs the regular one that has a Positive LCD panel. Unlike Positive displays where you get the clearest view when looking at it straight on it is recommended for negative displays to look at them from an angle because when you look at them straight on the reflection of your body and face in the crystal will dim the view. So in dim light conditions raise your arm and then tilt the watch away from you and you will get a better view!
