Unhappy San Francisco - No GPS Even in the Open!

What am I doing wrong here? I cannot seem to get a good run in. Today's example:
I wait the required ten to twelve minutes before the run (standing around in the street) and get GPS signal. I go to activities and start the log. It works up to .56 miles and stays there. I get a chance to stop at what it says is 1.67 when it starts again. Then it stops at 2.83 and won't restart. All this on what I know to be a Five Mile Run.
Each time it stops, GPS Fix changes to "Manual" and I have to go in and change it back to "1 sec". Is that too frequent for the city? Because I am in the open at least 75% of the time, shouldn't it restart on it's own?
Any help would be appreciated!

What model do you have the X9 or X10?

Also it should not be neccessary to stand 12 minutes in the open to get a fix. Usually 2-4 minutes should do it if you have performed the first fix procedure!

I think that the log file in your watch have become either full or corrupted. Check the following:

-Charge the battery to full

- Empty the watch memory logs

Then perform the first fix by doing the following:

-Do not go to activity or navigation mode instead directly from Time keeping mode hold down enter for 2 seconds to get to the functions menu. From here manually set the GPS fix to 1 sec intervalls and then manually turn on the GPS from there(do not enter activity mode). Once it has been turned on then use the lower right button to navigate to the Position option and push enter. Now you will be in the Positions submenu. Now do not wear the watch instead put it on a table or something and lay it flat down, face facing upwards. Let it sit like that for 20 minutes. Now first fix should be complete and it should then be much easier and faster to get fixes in the same area in the future.

First fixes only needs to be done once every few weeks or when moving more then 200Km (130 miles).

Once you completed the first fix then turn off GPS and enter the Activity mode and turn on the activity to play and the watch should be getting a signal rather quickly and it should be 4-5 bars in a open field.

Then start with your activity and it should operate rather nicely!

Joakim,

Thank you for responding! Ihave an X10 so I don't think I can access GPS Fix without going to Activty. But I will set that first, then go back to Time and follow the rest of your instructions. Hopefully it will work.
Thanks again, Jimmy C.

That's strange as I was just in San Francisco and my X10 worked great!! I never dropped below 2 bars... (it did take a bit to get a first fix though... )

Hello Joakim, is it possible to get the gps fix, and then start the 'tfs'? As I understand it, and I could be wrong, the timing and speed calculations are based on when you start searching for a signal, because that is when the 'tfs' starts running, and not when you actually get the GPS fix. So if it takes a few minutes to get the fix, the calculations that the watch makes are not accurate. Since the activity does not start until a fix is achieved, and the tfs is running, this results in less than accurate readings of speed etc. Thanks for your help, Larry
