map calibration using utm coordinates

Most Countries have a Geological survey where you can download topo maps for free.. The only issue is that they are frequently in the language of the host country, so you need to have some experience with some common symbols etc...

I did a quick check and found the British and French geological surveys, I am sure that other EU countries will have something similar.

If you want European maps in say, English, you may have to use a commercial Product. There are a few recommended in the Suunto X10 Manual..

I think you mean referencing a map to a known grid, such as georeferencing a map to the UTM grid. That would be a common requirement when using GIS, as indicated by a previous answer.

With the X10 you can downlod maps into the Trek manager software that comes with the watch and calibrate them in the program for use for planning out a route that can be programmed into the X10.

Well the software is old and buggy, and has a horrible UI (and does not support mac). But one of the quirks is that you are forced to use Polar Coordinates in order to calibrate the map to the software.
