Cool My new T6.

I just bought the T6, so far so good. The watch itself is not an impressive watch. As usually my wife asked me if I got a new watch, I told her, yes, but it cost me only $99.99, she did not say anything(Sorry Suunto, I am not saying that's what the watch worse, with all the goodies, I think the price falls in what is know in the IRS jargon as "Fair Market Value.") Any way, played with the watch a little bit, installed the software, and here is what the fun starts. Oh boy! All the things that this watch is capable to do, well, it perform as advertised. The only problem is the belt, is kind of unreliable, you really need to place it just like the manual says, and wet a little bit your skin, otherwise, the HR is kind of unreliable. After obtaining some data, I downloaded to the computer, and run the analysis. Man! It is fantastic. This is a truly piece of technology. If some one is interested in fitness, and wants to know how the body is doing, well, nothing better than this Suunto watch. It's money very well spent. Not just that, but having this toy, your are interested in reading more about your own body, learn how the heart works, basically how the whole body works. Since I got interested in these watches, I realized that if your heart if giving you trouble, well, I better get troubles someplace else but my heart. In my opinion your heart is the engine the runs your body, your brain is the computer that analyzes any internal or external data. Your brain needs oxygen to have top performance, so take your ginkgo biloba every day, lots of water, since you have your Suunto T6 now do some exercise, and plenty of sleep.

I think I spoke too soon. I am having problem with the software. I download the data from the Suunto T6, click the graph option in Training Manager, and what I get is a gray out screen. No data or analysis whatsoever, this is depressing. I tried several times, same result. I got some result the first time I download data from the watch to the computer, that's all. I was excited! After that, I tried about ten times, same result. Does anyone out there have the same result? Of course, using the new T6 software. I hate if I have to take the watch back to store, but I am loosing faith on it.

And the bad news continues

My new T6 was able to complete 2 training sessions and 1 upload before it would no longer communicate with the heart monitor strap or my PC. My support email to suunto.com since I could not find any phone support is as follows.

"My T6 is less than a week old. After 2 sucessful uses of the Heart rate
function with the chest strap including a sucessful download to my pc
the unit will no longer communicate with the strap or my pc.
On attempt to connect to HR strap unit shows a "No Device Found"
message.
Trouble shooting did include changing the battery in the chest strap
device with no change in issue.
Please provide a phone number for tech support as this my assist me
reaching a more rapid solution."

hard reset

So, suuntousa did respond to my email after 2 days. Their reply is as follows.

"In this case you could try a so called hard reset, that is taking out
the battery from the watch and then re-entering it. Your logs will not
be lost but you have to reset the time and date. If this does not help
you may call SuuntoUSA for assistance on the phone."

This suggestion seemed to work fine until I realized that now my watch (wrist computer) now thinks that my town is at 8800ft alt. (about 2700 actual) and that I have suddenly moved to Mexico where the temp is now 126 F. (about 68 F actual).

Well after trying all the settings the watch provides to reset or calibrate I was still unsucessful in convincing the watch of my current surroundings.

Lucky for me Suunto did refer me to a phone number for tech support at suuntousa Ph #1-800-543-9124.
Unlucky for me per Suunto's slogan "Replacing Luck" I was left on hold in their phone queue for over 30min. After my wait of listening to the same message over and over again referring me to their speedy electronic support solutions an seeming uninterested support tech. walked me through all the same settings I had already tried. The conclusion made by this tech was that the watch must have a defective sensor (even though it wasn't defective before the recommended "so called hard reset". Their solution call my reseller and have a nice day.

SUUNTOWATCHES.com to the rescue
Kudos to Trevor who answered the phone in no time flat (<30sec.)
Now my replacement is enroute and should arrive before my next running race.

Before this I was beginning to wonder why I just didn't by the Polar 6xx or 7xx series HRM instead.

Thanks to Trevor I'm giving Suunto a second chance.
I truly love good customer support for a product, I just find it tragic when said good support comes from the reseller and not the manufacture.

T6 Up and running

Well, in honor to the truth, I should say that I was doing something wrong with the T6. Am I a dumb? I don't think so, I need to blame something, in this case, the owner's manual. It has been written very poorly. Page 14 of the quick guide has some info about how to operate the watch in training mode. I'd like to see something like this:

Before starting make sure the belt is sending info to the watch. The watch should indicate your actual heart rate. Next press the following in this order:

1- Press Start/Stop to start the stopwatch.
2- Press Up/Lap to store data in the watch..
3- Press Start/Stop to stop the stopwatch.

Next, view data, download it to the computer, erase it, etc.

Something simple for the layman. If you are no familiar with the Suunto jargon, you are going to have some problems. The watch is great, I love it. Like I said before, it’s not the best looking watch, but what it does is amazing.

Case is closed.
